The Model 100

The Model 100

You spend your days at a keyboard. It is among the most universal of tools in our modern world. No matter what you make, your keyboard is an integral part of how you practice your craft. You deserve a good keyboard.

The Model 100 is that keyboard. We've designed it from the ground up to work the way your hands do. We've put the keys in places that are easy to reach while holding your hands in a natural position.

It features 64 hot-swappable mechanical keyswitches, individually addressable RGB LEDs under each custom-sculpted keycap, and open source firmware, all housed in a precision-milled hardwood enclosure.

The Model 100 is designed to be adjustable, with split halves that you can spread to a distance of your choice. If you want to adjust the angle vertically, we make it easy with a 1/4-20 tripod mount on the bottom of each half for use with a tripod of your choice or our custom-designed "octo-feet" stand kit (sold separately)

Introducing The Model 100

FAQ

How far apart can I put the two halves?

The Model 100 ships with two shielded RJ45 interconnect cables. One is a few inches long for when you want your keyboard's hands to be close together. The other is about 3 feet long, so you can adjust the two halves of your Model 100 to shoulder-width apart for a luxurious, relaxed typing experience.

Can I change the switches and keycaps, is it a kit?

Your Model 100 comes fully assembled with QWERTY keycaps and your choice of several different kinds of switches.

The Model 100 features hot-swap sockets designed to let you remove the switches with a standard keyswitch puller (not included) and replace them with just about any MX-style switch, no soldering or disassembly required.

The Model 100's keycaps are custom-designed for the keyboard's unique layout. We offer a variety of alternate keycap options for the Model 100.

Tell me more about the Model 100's key layout.

The Model 100's default key layout is designed to be instantly familiar to anyone who's typed on a QWERTY keyboard before, but is different enough that it will take a little bit of practice to get back to your normal typing speed. Read more about getting started with the Model 100's key layout.

What kind of firmware does the Model 100 run?

The firmware powering all our keyboards, Kaleidoscope, is open source and freely available on Github. If you want to build complex macros, add in joystick emulation, change how the Model 100 speaks USB, or make keys do things we haven't thought of yet, Kaleidoscope is where you'd start.

Kaleidoscope is incredibly powerful, but we've done our best to make it newbie-friendly. We built it on top of the Arduino core, to make it easy for folks who aren't familiar with embedded development or C++ to be able to do amazing things. At the same time, you're not restricted to the Arduino IDE when working with it. If vi or Emacs is your weapon of choice, everything's set up to build from the command line using standard tooling.

Kaleidoscope supports all the things you'd expect, like layouts stored in EEPROM, serial communications, full NKRO, mousekeys, and crazy USB tricks. Most new features can be added to Kaleidoscope as plugins, of which we have many already.

Why you want this keyboard

LED-lit Custom sculpted keycaps

The Model 100 features 64 individually-sculpted Keyboardio designed keycaps. Each key is shaped to guide your fingers for the best typing experience you’ve ever felt. There's an individually controllable RGB LED under each key, too. They doesn't make your Model 100 more ergonomic, but they look gorgeous.

Every key in reach

We designed the Model 100's layout to minimize wrist and finger movement, placing every key exactly where your fingers want it to be. Your wrists will thank you.

The palm key

With a flick of your wrist, 64 keys become more than 104. That’s a lot of power in your palm. Drop the base of your thumb onto either of the rounded palm keys and HJKL transform into home-row arrow keys, the number keys become F-keys, and WASD give you ultra-precise mouse control. And of course, that's all customizable with our easy-to-use online keyboard layout editor, Chrysalis.

The perfect angle

With the optional "octo-feet" tilt and tent kit, your can adjust your Model 100's tilt and tent angles for absolute comfort.

The Best Keyboard I’ve Ever Used

I’ve used several wired and wireless keyboards over the years, but the Model 100 stands out as the best among them. Here are the main reasons why:

Choice of wood types (I chose walnut, but if your table is light, maple is also recommended)

    - Keytops that range from linear to heavy

    - Key layout optimized for split keyboards and special key input led by Fun

    - Customizability of key layout

    - Very large palm rest and adjustable stand

    - Choice of wood types

You might think that using a palm rest would normally promote discoloration due to hand sweat, but the wood used in the Model 100 is very robustly protected. I’ve been using it for about two years now and there’s no discoloration. Also, the thickness of the wood is substantial, providing enough weight that it doesn’t move with normal typing.

Keytops that range from linear to heavy I chose the BOX Silent Tactile, but the sound is louder than I expected. The reason I chose silent was because my remote conference speaker is right in front of the keyboard, but Teams’ noise reduction performance is high, so I’ve never been told it’s particularly noisy. Therefore, if you don’t get complaints from your family at home or in the office, choosing White Clicky is not a bad choice.

    - Key layout optimized for split keyboards and special key input led by Fun

This was a point that I initially struggled to get used to. Until I got used to it, I tried it in parallel with a normal QWERTY keyboard and only used it for a few hours a day until…

    Best investment for life

Since I use my new Keyboardio M100 I experienced some small but important changes on my work:

    - my hands stopped hurting,

    - I can type much more relaxed,

    - I enjoy everyday the smooth wooden texture and the low, muffled sound (I use the quiet version).

I must say that more than a keyboard, I feel it more like an instrument; used quite tented (like I do) is like a bandoneón.

The attention in design and construction, and the love that went into it are so strong that you can almost touch them. :)

For me, it is a constant source of pleasure, and health!

    Thanks Jesse and Kaia. :)

PD: sorry for the ugliness of the prototype for positioning. I'm still adjusting it and now I'll make or buy something to leave it like this.

    Ergonomic luxury

I have a kickstarter Model 01 that I have used for years. It's now on occasional WFH duty as the Model 100 is better in key ways that make it my daily driver at the office. The Model 100 BOX silent switches are solid with zero wobble, a satisfying tactile bump, and a pleasingly muted tone -- like raindrops on the window.

The wood enclosure feels great as a palm rest and looks sharp. My 01 is maple and my 100 is walnut. The 01 is still scratch and blemish-free after all these years so I have high expectations for my 100.

The graphical configuration tool was easy to use on Ubuntu and got me back to my programming-focused custom layout I used on the 01 with zero effort. Make sure you play around and find a good layout that works for you.

My favorite feature are the palm switches! It's so refreshing to have HJKL vim arrow keys available everywhere with just a simple shift of the wrist. If vim-style isn't your thing, it's all remappable to your preference. The palm switch will switch you to a different "layer" of your key layout. It's like doubling the number of keys on the board.

The model 100 has my full recommendation. I keep trying to push it on my coworkers if they mention ergo keyboards. Join the wood team!😄

Two Models 100 and one model 01

I've taken the plunge with the model 01 and have no regrets (except when I have to type on regular keyboards). The model 01 was ergonomically fantastic and overall a very good keyboard but with the model 100 everything got improved. Key switches, finishing and it's still the best ergonomic keyboard in my opinion (I've tried the kinesis advantage and a ergodox but either is as good for my large hands). When the model 100 came out I bought one straight away and after a bit less than a year after receiving it bought a second one to keep permanently at my office (RTO be blamed!).

    Awesome design and thoughtful implementation

The Keyboardio team has delivered an awesome keyboard! The design is beautiful and a joy to type on. Keyboardio has a deep knowledge of the mechanical keyboard space and has implemented many conveniences like the standard ethernet cable to connect the two halves, USB-C native connection, a tenting kit, and a standard screw for attaching your own tenting solution, which I'm using in my rig (see picture).

    Top shelf!
